On the Frontlines of Sustainability
A peek into what LastBench Studio is doing for a greener planet, on this World Environment Day
When you call a place your home, it’s natural to accept and care about it as your haven - as a place that shelters you from all harm, and something you are responsible to look after in return. You take great care of it and set time aside to make sure it's well maintained because it deserves the care and effort. So shouldn’t the planet we call our home be looked after in the same way?
It all started with a lively lunchtime discussion about composting, spearheaded by our co-founder, Sriram, who already had a successful compost setup at home. Inspired by his green thumb, the rest of the team decided to bring composting into the studio as well. What once was a smelly return to the studio after a weekend is now a fresh, eco-friendly environment with a remarkable 100% reduction in wet waste. Talk about turning trash into treasure!

One after the other, we started identifying these areas of improvement. Our mutual drive to actively work on fixing these things led us to make many small but impactful changes around the office. It's as simple as closing the door when the AC is on, reducing our habits of getting food delivered, replacing plastic containers with paper, or swapping packaged chips and cookies with healthy dabbas that come in reusable steel boxes - something that’s good for the environment and the body.
But what else is good for the body? Something that’s hidden in plain sight - air. Clarification, clean and fresh air! If you ever end up visiting us, you will be greeted by a whole lot of potted plants enveloping our open balcony and entrance - a nice addition to the aesthetics that’s also very eco-friendly! Even Ramesh Bhaiya, our office staff, who waters these plants every day is conscious about the amount of water he uses. Instead of a convenient hose, which tragically ends up wasting a lot of water, he prefers using the traditional bucket and mug. The same Ramesh Bhaiya also cuts us all fresh fruits every morning, exactly at 11 am, ensuring we eat well. Ramesh Bhaiya cares about the environment and good health. Be like Ramesh Bhaiya.

All in all, we like to think of these sustainable practices as small steps towards a bigger impact, proving that a fun and creative workspace can be equally eco-friendly. And just like that, hopefully, one day we’ll become a zero-waste office.
So the next time you visit and see any one of us chugging out of a glass gin bottle in broad daylight - here’s a heads up that it’s just water, but in a repurposed alcohol bottle. If each one of us were to become aware of these small choices, we could eventually make this planet a better place to live.
